New Multi-Use Pathway Completed in Nictaux

ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - Aug. 25, 2014) -

Thanks to federal investments, families and residents in Annapolis County have access to a new connector trail providing shortcuts and easier access between the Lorcon and Orchard Drive subdivisions in Nictaux. The new Scotney Pathway greatly increases pedestrian and cyclist safety by helping to keep pedestrians and cyclists off the roads and highways. It also provides a better route for walking and biking to the Town of Middleton.

The new pathway is five feet wide and 430 meters long. It is accessible to people facing mobility challenges. It is wheelchair-friendly, and provides easy access to most users, including families with strollers, or people on scooters and bicycles.

The pathway was developed on properties owned by the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, the County of Annapolis, and land that was donated by Mr. Terry Scotney.

"This beautiful trail is another great example of how Nova Scotians benefit from the municipalities, federal government, and the province working together. The Scotney Pathway has been designed as a wheelchair assisted pathway, to provide a safe and accessible trail that links the subdivisions of Orchard Drive and Lorcon."

Stephen McNeil, Premier, Nova Scotia

"Our Government is pleased to support innovative projects like these and to respond to the evolving needs of local residents. It's always great to see residents give back to their community and I want to thank Mr. Scotney for his generous donation of land. I am delighted that this new pathway will promote active, healthy living and contribute to the health and well-being of the families and residents of Annapolis County for many years to come. Federal investments in our communities, like the one we are celebrating today, demonstrate our government's continued commitment to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity."

Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova

"We are thrilled to have this afternoon to officially recognize the new trail section, Scotney Pathway, here in Nictaux. This section not only connects two communities but it also provides safer shortcuts for easier access and connectivity in and around communities for walking and biking. Special thanks to Terry Scotney whose generous donation of land to the County created this wonderful opportunity, to our staff who worked diligently on this project; and, a large thank you to our partnering governments - the federal government through the Gas Tax Fund and the provincial government - who made this addition possible."

Reg Ritchie, Annapolis County Warden
