Athletes, Entrepreneurs and Investors Gather in Detroit During the Draft to Discuss Working Together to Build Community and Generational Wealth

Tech entrepreneurs, active and former professional athletes, investors and community leaders gathered last week to discuss investing in local startups, connecting sports and tech communities, and building generational wealth while in Detroit for the 2024 NFL Draft presented by Bud Light.

The event was led by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Black Tech Saturdays and former first-round pick Charles Harris, capitalizing on the national stage of the draft to shine a light on Detroit's diverse tech ecosystem and Michigan's strong STEAM talent. It featured a panel discussion, networking and remarks by prominent figures including Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II.

Alexa Turnage, co-founder of Black Tech Saturdays, emphasized the importance of capturing this national moment for the city as an opportunity to bring more people to the table. Athletes are ambassadors of hope and opportunity in their communities, and they carry incredible influence. By working with organizations like Black Tech Saturdays and the MEDC, and having these important discussions, they are elevating incredible innovation happening in Detroit and breaking barriers for more athletes to do the same.

During the panel, Quentin L. Messer, Jr., CEO of the MEDC, spoke to the opportunities athletes have to inspire economic development in Michigan and nationwide. Using a moment like the draft to gather and share ideas will fuel economic impact not only in Detroit, but throughout Michigan, said Messer.
