Cuba Gooding Jr. Delivers Another Oscar-Caliber Performance In 'The Firing Squad'

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / March 26, 2024 / In 1997, Cuba Gooding Jr. won the Oscar in ‘Jerry Maguire'. Flash forward 27 years later and Cuba is now starring in the faith-based movie ‘The Firing Squad'. He plays an ex-drug dealer facing execution in a third world jail.

The movie is based on the true story of three Christian prisoners who face execution in Indonesia and win the the entire prison camp to Christ.

"Many people in early preview screenings have said Cuba's performance should win him an Oscar in a fair world," says a spokesperson for Rock Studios.

"So happy that Cuba has recommitted his life to the Lord," says Susan Chey, one of the producers of ‘The Firing Squad'. "We've all gone through dark valleys in life and we're glad to see no one is beyond redemption."

In the film, Cuba's character plans to escape with the other two prisoners, but is caught in Thailand. After his capture, Cuba's character finds Christ and does a 180 degree turnaround.

He marches to his execution singing "Amazing Grace".

"I've had people tell me Cuba's finale is one of the greatest in American cinema," says Tim Chey, the director. "John Newton wrote that song after being a slave-trader and finding Christ in a storm. This is how many come to Christ - in a storm."

Chey is a former atheist who hated Christianity while he was at Harvard and later when he practiced law. "I found Christ through a Gideon's Bible in a hotel in Manila after partying and drinking. That was 22 years ago. No one is beyond redemption through the Cross. Praise God."

The latest screening in Greenville, North Carolina on March 24, 2024 had such a tremendous overflow that people were sitting on stairs and on the railings.

"It was historic," says a spokesperson for RiverRain. "We think Tim said it best that it was similar to Asbury College's jaw-dropping nights filled with people worshiping Jesus."

‘The Firing Squad' hits theaters nationwide on August 9, 2024
