No More Attacks! Youth Advocates Stand Up for LGBTQIA+ Rights
Young advocates from across the metropolitan Cleveland area will lead a grassroots townhall Saturday to address ongoing attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community and the rise of discriminatory legislation in Ohio and nationwide. The event is part of the We The People National March campaign.
In 2023, more than 530 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills were introduced in statehouses across the country, including Ohio, according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). HRC adds that 74 pieces of discriminatory legislation against the LGBTQIA+ community have been signed into law. Locally, the Ohio House of Representatives passed HB 8, a bill modeled after Florida's "Don't Say LGBTQ+" bill, and HB 68, which, as amended, would prohibit gender affirming care for transgender youth as well as ban transgender students from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity.
