Governor Newsom Outsources Housing Stance to Corporate Landlords, says Justice for Renters

As more than 732,000 Californians sent letters to Governor Gavin Newsom asking him to support rent control, or at the very least not oppose it, the Governor's office referred reporters to the anti-renter Californians for Responsible Housing sponsored by California Apartment Association for an official campaign response.

"It's disturbing to learn that the industry speaks for the Governor," said Denny Zane, Co-chair of Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights (SMRR) and Director at Move CA. "Nevertheless, we remain hopeful Governor Newsom speaks for himself."

"Renters are hurting more now than ever. The cost of rent is skyrocketing along with the cost of groceries and gas, leaving low-income seniors, veterans, single parents, retail workers, and teachers struggling to make ends meet," said Susie Shannon, Policy Director for Housing Is A Human Right. "We would hope someone elected to represent all Californians would pay attention to how people are struggling and not automatically assume the stance of anti-renter corporate landlords and Big Real Estate."

"Because of state policies, we are losing hundreds of existing affordable housing units every day as decontrolled rents climb," Zane added. "We now are losing more affordable units than we ever could build. The Justice for Renters Act will chart a different course."
