Twenty new homes for First Nations families underway near Prince Rupert


PRINCE RUPERT, BC , Oct. 20, 2023 /CNW/ - First Nation families and couples from the Gitxaa?a Nation will soon have access to 20 new affordable rental homes, as construction starts on a townhouse complex near Prince Rupert. Today, the Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia announced combined funding of $16 million towards the project.

Located on 1414 Kootenay Ave., the townhomes will be spread across four two-storey buildings and will be offered to low- and- moderate-income families. To meet the needs of different families, the development will have two-, three- and four-bedroom homes. The homes are being built on the former Harbour View Gardens site.

The project will be managed by the Prince Rupert Indigenous Housing Society (PRIHS), a non-profit housing organization representing the Gitxaa?a Nation. Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
