The Southern California District Council of Laborers (SCDCL) awarded $678,500 in college scholarships to the dependent children of members of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), through the Mike Quevedo, Sr. Scholarship Fund. Now in its 28th year, the Mike Quevedo, Sr. Scholarship Fund provided scholarship monies to 120 students for the 2023 academic year. According to SCDCL Business Manager, Jon P. Preciado, "In 28 years, this is the highest amount we have ever awarded, and this is a legacy of which we all can be proud."

Preciado stated: "We are thankful for all of our supporters and are proud to provide opportunities to our members' children and their families through this scholarship foundation. Many of our scholarship recipients are the first in their family to attend college, and we are honored to help them achieve their educational goals."

The Mike Quevedo, Sr. Scholarship Fund is a non-profit organization created for the purpose of raising scholarship monies and honoring its namesake. Mike Quevedo, Sr., who came to Southern California from New Mexico at the age of 16 in 1926. Mike began his construction career in 1940, worked his way up through the ranks, and eventually became Business Manager of Laborers' Local 300 in Los Angeles. A labor pioneer, Mike believed that it was important to give young people in the community a chance to improve their opportunity in life by attending college and this scholarship fund continues that legacy.

Since 2000, the Mike Quevedo, Sr. Scholarship Fund has provided more than $4,250,000 in scholarship monies to over 1,500 children of LIUNA members in Southern California. Student recipients have attended local community colleges and universities throughout California, as well as ivy-league institutions across the country.
