Media Advisory - Government of Canada to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Swissair Flight 111 tragedy


HALIFAX, NS, Aug. 31, 2023 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada will commemorate the 25th anniversary of Operation Persistence, Canada's military response to the Swissair Flight 111 tragedy. A delegation, led by the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, and including Veterans, former RCMP officers, first responders, and family members of those lost in the Swissair Flight 111 tragedy will attend a series of events this weekend in Nova Scotia.

On Saturday, September 2, 2023, Minister Petitpas Taylor and the delegation will participate in a candlelight tribute at the Bayswater Memorial to honour and remember the 229 passengers and crew who perished 25 years ago.

On Sunday, September 3, 2023, Minister Petitpas Taylor will lead the delegation in a commemorative ceremony at the Peggy's Cove Swissair Memorial in Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia, to recognize and remember Canada's contribution to the recovery efforts in the aftermath of the 1998 Swissair Flight 111 tragedy.

Note: Parking will not be available at the Memorial site. Parking is available at the Peggy's Cove Lighthouse Visitors Centre. Shuttle transportation to the ceremony will be provided.
