Duke Energy begins power restoration after remnants of Hurricane Idalia pass through the Carolinas

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 31, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- High winds and flooding have about 20,000 Duke Energy customers without power Thursday morning as the remnants of Hurricane Idalia exit the Carolinas.

The company plans to restore all impacted customers who can receive power by Thursday night.

"Duke Energy has more than 4,000 personnel in place to continue power restoration today," said Jason Hollifield, Duke Energy's Carolinas storm director. "We are committed to working as quickly and safely as possible to get the lights back on for our customers and we thank them for their patience."

Already, more than 60,000 customers have had power restored since the storm began rolling through the Carolinas Wednesday.

The company is providing estimated power restoration times to customers once damage assessments are completed. The company also will provide regular updates to customers and communities through emails, text messages, outbound phone calls, social media and its website.

After the storm

Stay away from power lines that have fallen or are sagging. Consider all lines energized, as well as trees, limbs or anything in contact with lines.

If a power line falls across a car that you are in, stay in the car. If you MUST get out of the car due to a fire or other immediate life-threatening situation, do your best to jump clear of the car and land on both feet. Be sure that no part of your body is touching the car when your feet touch the ground.
