Statement by Minister Khera marking six years since Myanmar military's attack on Rohingya

Today, the Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, issued a statement to mark six years since Myanmar military's attack on Rohingya

OTTAWA, ON, Aug. 25, 2023 /CNW/ - Six years ago on this date, the Rohingya people residing in Rakhine State, Myanmar, suffered a senseless and unjustifiable assault carried out by the nation's security forces. This act of violence resulted in the tragic loss of nearly 7,000 lives, including hundreds of innocent children, and drove nearly three-quarters of a million Rohingya to flee their homeland?the largest displacement in history.

Even today, over half a million Rohingya people continue to endure discrimination and persecution under Myanmar's military regime. As we solemnly observe the sixth anniversary of the Rohingya attack, our government remembers the victims of these atrocities. We stand in solidarity with the survivors and families whose lives have been forever altered. We condemn the continued persecution, discrimination and violence faced by the Rohingya community.

As hate rises against various communities, both in Canada and across the globe, our commitment to protecting human rights and dignity for all remains steadfast. We owe this dedication to the victims and survivors of this crisis, as well as to future generations.

As Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, I invite all Canadians to remember the victims of this tragedy, many of whom have sought refuge in Canada and have enriched our nation with their invaluable contributions. Let's come together and strengthen our commitment to creating a caring and inclusive society that welcomes diversity and opposes all forms of hatred. We can work as one to build a world where everyone is treated with respect and kindness, without facing persecution or fear.
