Theologist Shares Critical Commentary Against Popular Christian Teachings and Purity Culture

Harmony Claire provides resources and biblical sources to help readers free themselves from prolonged singleness

ANTIOCH, Tenn., July 17, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Author Harmony Claire wants to challenge the popular narrative surrounding singleness as a Christian. In her new book, "Sick of Singleness: A Biblical Guide to Breaking Free and Finding Love," she utilizes her theological education and experience with prolonged singleness to help readers shed the traditional narratives and experience true connection.

"My love life was 'stuck on red' for years," Claire said. "I had faithfully done whatever popular Christian culture touted as God's way to do romance. I read the books, made the promises, quoted the mantras, and joined the movements. To my surprise, instead of being promptly paraded down the aisle by white doves praising my faithfulness, I found myself securely stuck at the singleness redlight for nearly a decade."

Claire not only walks readers through her personal experience, she also provides biblical evidence to help readers take control of their own personal narrative. Many readers may recognize Claire's references to the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) that was introduced to pop culture via the Dugger family, their series of TV shows and the more recent documentary, "Shiny Happy People." "Sick of Singleness" acknowledges the influence of IBLP on ministry and how its principles can be credited with helping to trap people in unwanted singleness.

"These ultra-conservative purity culture teachings do more harm than good," Claire said. "Extrabiblical doctrines have distorted popular Christian culture's romance narrative. We choose to rely on human leaders to spoon-feed us doctrines, instead of doing the hard work of digging into the scriptures ourselves. We fail to measure their teachings against God's actual word. Even the most well-intentioned leaders are not without error or above deception."

Claire wants readers to understand their personal responsibility to challenge faulty theology, and to take initiative to change their lives.
