SURREY, BC, July 6, 2023 /CNW/ - Visitors to Central City mall in Surrey on July 7 and 8 may be surprised to see a massive banana peel sculpture on display to remind people that most "accidents" aren't really accidents.
The temporary public installation?a cross-cultural, well-understood symbol of "the accident waiting to happen"?will be set up in the plaza outside Central City Mall off 102 Avenue on Friday and Saturday.
The Community Against Preventable Injuries (Preventable) has brought back the "Big Banana," in collaboration with the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit (BCIRPU) and Central City to draw attention to the issue of preventable injuries.
"The 'Big Banana' reminds us that 90 percent of the time, we can see 'accidents' coming," said Dr. Ian Pike, Executive Director of Preventable and Director of the BCIRPU. "Whether they're injuries that happen at home, at work, on the road, and anywhere in-between, if you are aware of them, then you can prevent them from happening in the first place."
Media and members of the public are invited to come and take photos and video of the banana and share images using social media and the hashtag #PreventableBanana. A street team will be present on-site to chat with passersby and give away promotional materials.
