SAFE Credit Union Recommits Support for Homeless Veterans

SAFE Credit Union grants $20,000 in funds to one of the only remaining area organizations providing transitional housing for veterans experiencing homelessness.

FOLSOM, Calif., June 14, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For the second year, SAFE Credit Union is granting funds to one of the only remaining Sacramento-area organizations providing transitional housing for veterans experiencing homelessness.

The credit union is awarding $20,000 to Volunteers of America Northern California and Northern Nevada. The nonprofit plans to use the grant to help fund its Transitional Housing Program providing shelter and resources for up to 80 veterans each night.

"Ours is one of the only transitional housing programs left in the Sacramento area and it aims to provide dignified housing, employment services, case management and other tools to veterans who would otherwise be homeless," says Volunteers of America CEO Christie Holderegger.

"As an organization we cannot do it alone and to have such a reliable source of support in SAFE Credit Union makes a huge difference," Holderegger continues. "We also appreciate the fact that the grant committee and SAFE as a whole care deeply for veterans and their journey to becoming self-sufficient."

SAFE has a proud history supporting members of the military and veterans. The credit union opened in 1940 as the Sacramento Air Depot Federal Credit Union. Each spring, SAFE donates funds through its Community Sustainability Grant program to nonprofits dedicated to assisting veterans.

"We are so fortunate to have such a committed and long-lasting program for veterans in our area and to be able to continue our tradition of veteran support by boosting their endeavors," says SAFE Credit Union President and CEO Faye Nabhani.

Volunteers of America Northern California and Northern Nevada provide shelter, housing and supportive services to 3,500 individuals and families each night, according to Ana Bankert, Vice President of Development and Marketing.

Last year, SAFE awarded $10,000 to support Volunteers of America's financial education sessions for homeless veterans seeking new employment.

SAFE annually awards up to $120,000 in grants in phases focusing on its three pillars of philanthropy: veterans, healthcare, and education.

SAFE is also awarding a $10,000 grant to Soil Born Farms for its "farm to wellness" programs offering job training and therapeutic experiences to veterans.
