Penetron Technology Underpins Nashville Airport Expansion

The latest phase of construction in the Nashville International Airport (BNA) to expand its international passenger capacity in Nashville, Tennessee (USA), was completed October 2022. The Penetron System was specified to ensure waterproof concrete for key below-grade terminal structures.

EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., May 31, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The latest phase of construction in the Nashville International Airport (BNA) to expand its international passenger capacity in Nashville, Tennessee (USA), was completed October 2022. The Penetron System was specified to ensure waterproof concrete for key below-grade terminal structures.

Established in 1937 as a public/military airport in the southeastern section of Nashville, Tennessee, BNA has four runways and is served predominantly by Southwest Airlines and 21 further airlines. With 585 daily arriving and departing flights, the airport reaches both domestic and foreign destinations and is home to the 118th Wing and the 1/230th Air Cavalry Squadron Tennessee Army National Guard.

To accommodate continued growth at BNA, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority's expansion plan is successively expanding capacity. The most recent phase of construction comprised the foundation structures of the new international arrivals terminal, three six-floor airport terminal garages, a pedestrian bridge connecting the garages to the terminal building, and a new concourse.

Due to the ever-present groundwater conditions at the construction site, the Penetron System was specified for key parts of the below-grade walls under the international arrivals terminal. The concrete ready-mix supplier, imi, provided PENETRON ADMIX-treated concrete mix for the grade beams, footers, and walls, and PENEBAR SW waterstop strips to seal the construction joints. PENETRON ADMIX SB-treated grout was also used to fill space left from the one-sided form system of the basement walls.

Crystalline Formation Provides a Longer Life for Concrete
When mixed into concrete, the proprietary chemicals in PENETRON ADMIX and all topical Penetron products react to moisture in the concrete to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation in the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. This formation permanently seals micro-cracks, pores, and capillaries against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction.
