Joint statement from ministers Alghabra and Qualtrough on disability-inclusive air travel

GATINEAU, QC, May 26, 2023 /CNW/ - Yesterday, the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, met with the National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC) to discuss a shared commitment to do more for persons with disabilities when they travel by air. Following a productive and candid meeting, Minister Qualtrough and the Honourable Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transport, issued the following statement:

"The commitment from the National Airlines Council of Canada to passenger accessibility, including their specific focus on disability awareness and inclusion training and improved mobility device transportation and care, is a positive step toward disability-inclusive air travel. We support their endeavour, but more must be done to ensure that persons with disabilities can access equitable and dignified services and no longer face barriers when travelling in Canada.

In the last year, Canadians have read stories of how some persons with disabilities have received unacceptable treatment when travelling by air. There have been instances of wheelchairs being damaged, passengers with disabilities being separated from their travel companions, and passengers being treated differently because of the lack of disability awareness and training.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, we are disappointed at the unacceptable treatment that some persons with disabilities have received while travelling. Passengers have rights when they travel. They must be treated with respect and dignity throughout their journey, full stop.

As the federal government, we are committing to do more. This includes:

While the federal government seeks to use its levers to improve the overall air traveller experience for persons with disabilities, we also call upon NACC members to make important changes in how they do business and how they serve air travellers with disabilities. This includes:

The Government of Canada is committed to a fully accessible and inclusive Canada for all its citizens and visitors. This includes ensuring that airline passengers with disabilities will have a safe, dignified and reliable travel experience."
