Operation Dry Water reminds boaters that impaired driving extends to the waterways
Operation Dry Water (ODW) is pleased to join boating safety advocates nationwide as part of National Safe Boating Week, May 20 - 26, to remind boat operators and passengers of the dangers associated with boating under the influence (BUI).
LEXINGTON, Ky., May 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As the summer boating season kicks off, Operation Dry Water (ODW) is pleased to join boating safety advocates nationwide as part of National Safe Boating Week, May 20 - 26, to remind boat operators and passengers of the dangers associated with boating under the influence (BUI). National Safe Boating Week serves as a crucial reminder for boaters to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions while enjoying recreational activities on the water.
Impaired boating is a significant concern, as alcohol and drugs can impair a boater's judgment, reaction time, and overall ability to operate a boat safely. Alcohol use continues to be the leading contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities.* Operation Dry Water seeks to address this issue head-on by educating boaters about the risks associated with boating while impaired and increasing law enforcement presence on the water.
"National Safe Boating Week provides an excellent opportunity for us to come together as a boating community and emphasize the significance of safe boating practices," said Susan Stocker, National Association of State Boating Law Administrators' (NASBLA) Chair. "Staying sober while boating, always wearing a life jacket when on or around the water and completing a boating safety course prior to departure are crucial measures that can significantly enhance boater safety. It is essential to recognize that impaired boating is impaired driving, and by prioritizing these practices, we can prevent incidents and save lives."
Alcohol consumption while boating is not only dangerous for the operator of the vessel, but also for passengers.** Impairment can lead to slips, falls overboard, injuries and deaths that could have been prevented.
By working together with boating safety advocates nationwide, Operation Dry Water aims to reduce incidents and fatalities related to impaired boating. This year will be the 15th annual Operation Dry Water heightened awareness and enforcement weekend, taking place nationwide July 1 ? 3. Operation Dry Water provides a variety of free resources for both law enforcement and outreach partners to use in educating boaters about the dangers of boating under the influence. Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies can register to participate in Operation Dry Water at operationdrywater.org.

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) coordinates the Operation Dry Water campaign, in partnership with law enforcement agencies and outreach partners nationwide, through a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Operation Dry Water (ODW) is a year-round boating under the influence awareness and enforcement campaign with the mission of reducing the number of alcohol and drug-related incidents and fatalities through increased recreational boater awareness and by fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use on the water.
