The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) meeting in Regina, Saskatchewan, April 30 to May 5, 2023
OTTAWA, ON, April 27, 2023 /CNW/ - The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) meets twice a year to review the status of wildlife species that have been identified as potentially being at risk of extinction from Canada, as they are mandated to do under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA).
The next meeting will be from April 30 to May 5, 2023. The COSEWIC meeting will take place on Treaty 4 territory, in Regina, Saskatchewan. The territory and homelands of the nêhiyawak, Anih?in?p?k, Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis/Michif Nation. COSEWIC will determine the status of 20 Canadian wildlife species. These include two species of snake and the Northwestern Pond Turtle, none of which have been documented in Canada for over 50 years, as well as three species of bat potentially threatened by wind turbines along their migration routes.
Following the meeting, a press release will be issued that summarizes the results of the discussions, highlighting ongoing Canadian conservation challenges and successful conservation actions.
