Media Advisory: Rally to support local union leaders fired for raising Health & Safety concerns

ALLISTON, ON, Feb. 9, 2023 /CNW/ - Workers, community members, and allies will hold a public rally to protest the recent firing of three Developmental Service workers by the Community Living Association for South Simcoe (CLASS). The three workers had their positions terminated by CLASS management after raising concerns about the health and safety of workers at the organization.

DATE: Friday, February 10th
TIME: 12 noon
LOCATION: The office of Simcoe-Grey MPP Brian Saunderson,
Suite 28, 180 Parsons Rd., Alliston, ON

CLASS staff have faced an increase in physical and verbal assaults in recent months. Although originating from a small percentage of total residents, CLASS facilities are not designed or equipped to accommodate individuals with a history of violence or substance use, resulting in concussions, stitches, broken bones, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The union has been calling for CLASS Executive Director, Andrew Walker, to address the health and safety crisis, yet instead of addressing the concerns, Walker fired the union leadership.

CLASS receives funding from the Ministry of Children and Social Services (MCCSS) to support individuals with developmental disabilities. The workers at CLASS assist clients in their daily living activities and support them in participating in the community, through social and community activities, employment and volunteer opportunities, and the like, to enhance independence and increase quality of life.

This rally is an opportunity to support the fired union leaders and demand immediate action by CLASS Executive Director, Andrew Walker, to protect the safety of CLASS workers and return the three workers to their jobs.

OPSEU/SEFPO Local 332 President Allan May, one of the workers who lost his job advocating for health and safety, is available to speak with the media.
