Judy Heumann and Fable Pathways partner to deliver critical career skills for disabled people

Course launched in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month

TORONTO, Canada, Oct. 12, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Fable, a leading digital accessibility platform has launched a new online course today, led by Judy Heumann, legendary disability rights advocate, appointee of the Clinton and Obama administrations, and co-founder of the World Institute on Disability (WID). 'Advocating for work' empowers participants with the critical skills needed to thrive in the workforce as people with disabilities.

Heumann's course is the latest addition to Fable's Pathways, a series of expert-led training courses for people with disabilities interested in career opportunities in technology. To ensure the broadest reach, the skill-building program is offered at no cost and video-based courses are available anytime, anywhere. Earlier this year, Fable Pathways released its course on web development taught by software engineer, Program Manager, and accessibility advocate Kelly Ford of Microsoft.

With 1 in 6 people globally having a disability, inclusion and accessibility in the workforce is critical. Today, people with disabilities are 50% less likely to get jobs, and historically the jobs they perform tend to be at the lower corporate levels. Barriers to employment of people with disabilities remains a loss of human capital.

"The unemployment rate for disabled people is at least twice as high as for non-disabled people in countries around the world," says Heumann. "This is unacceptable. I was interested in working with Fable because of their efforts to ensure that disabled people are receiving training and experience to enter the workforce. The more disabled people we get into fields of employment, the more we can break down these barriers."

Jobs in technology open important economic opportunities for those with disabilities, from higher wages to barrier-free remote work. With sweeping global digital transformation, there is an ever-growing demand for diverse talent that presents huge employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Access to both the technical and soft skills needed to succeed in the workforce is more critical than ever for those with disabilities.

"Judy Heumann is a lifelong advocate for equitable opportunities for people with disabilities around the world; she brings unparalleled insight to Fable Pathways," says Alwar Pillai, CEO and co-founder of Fable. "Her work experience as a person with a disability, as well as her commitment to increasing opportunities for others with disabilities through careers in the public, private, and non-profit sectors will offer immeasurable value for Fable Pathways learners."
