100 year-old president of the Rabbinical Committee of the Traditional Charedi Education welcomes Michelle Donelan and asks her to scrap Schools Bill 2022

Centenarian Rabbi Elyakim Schlesinger, president of the Rabbinical Committee of the Traditional Charedi Education writes to congratulate Michelle Donelan on her appointment as the new Education Secretary, following Jewish protest against Schools Bill 2022.

LONDON, July 6, 2022  /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- NEW EDUCATION SECRETARY WELCOMED BY ORTHODOX JEWISH HEAD

Following the appointment of Michelle Donelan as the new Education Secretary, the centenarian dean, Rabbi Elyakim Schlesinger, president of the Rabbinical Committee of the Traditional Charedi Education wrote to her this morning to congratulate her on the exalted appointment.

He also drew her attention to the Schools Bill currently being discussed in Parliament, which seeks to introduce changes that would have a fundamental negative and adverse impact on religious education.

Rabbi Schlesinger stated that whilst the UK is proud to be a country that allows people of all faiths to live in harmony according to their respective religious principles "the Schools Bill, unfortunately, flies in the face of this great tradition by attempting to alter fundamental facets of Jewish practice."

Yesterday as the International Ministerial Conference on Freedom of Religion took place in London, one hundred representatives of the UK's strictly orthodox Jewish community gathered outside, wearing yellow star patches, to protest the Schools Bill.

"It is baffling that whilst this conference is promoting global freedom of religion, the Government is seeking to oppress freedom of religion in its own backyard", said Rabbi Asher Gratt, a spokesman for the delegates.

"Part 3 and 4 of the Schools Bill contains provisions that violate freedom of religion, riding roughshod over the United Kingdom's obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights."

"The Charedi educational system is very successful; its graduates are law-abiding, peaceful, and prosperous citizens" Rabbi Gratt continued. "Our schools do not suffer from bullying, violence or other social evils".

"Our education is based on teaching our children Torah, which has been lovingly passed down from generation to generation. It was entrusted to us from G-d on Mount Sinai over three thousand years ago. It is the very foundation of our life and existence. The Schools Bill is, therefore, a death sentence upon our community."

"It is to an Edict of Expulsion for Orthodox Jews of the United Kingdom!"
