Crimson Renewable Energy Boosts Green Jobs and Biodiesel Production with Expanded Bakersfield Facility

Company Now Largest Producer of Ultra-low Carbon Biodiesel in the Western United States

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.,  April 14, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Crimson Renewable Energy today formally unveiled its newly completed expansion project at its Bakersfield facility, making the company the largest producer or ultra-low carbon biodiesel in the Western United States.

The multi-million-dollar plant expansion makes it possible for Crimson to use a greater variety of waste oils and byproduct inedible fats to produce ultra-low carbon biodiesel.

"This new state-of-the-art facility represents another major stride in our ongoing mission to aid California in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and harmful particulate and hydrocarbon emissions, especially from heavy-duty trucks and other types of diesel-based equipment and transportation," said Harry Simpson, Crimson's President and CEO.

The plant was designed by BDI-BioEnergy International, an engineering firm based in Austria, specializing in designing and building biodiesel production facilities. The new plant takes the annual capacity of Crimson Bakersfield facility to just over 37 million gallons of biodiesel. Most of that biodiesel is consumed in the Bakersfield-Fresno and Bakersfield-Los Angeles corridors of I-5 and Highway 99.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
That translates into major environmental benefits. With the new plant, which will produce13+ million gallons per year, Crimson's three biodiesel plants will now produce up nearly 49 million gallons of biodiesel per year. This removes 497,000 metric tons of carbon each year, equivalent to taking 108,000 cars off the road every year.

"California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard has made significant progress in reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector, with a broad spectrum of fuels, including biodiesel, playing a role," said Richard W. Corey, Executive Office of the California Air Resources Board. "The Low Carbon Fuel Standard is stimulating major investments in low carbon alternative fuels and other low carbon transportation energy solutions such as what you see today at the Crimson Bakersfield biodiesel production facility. Those investments are important tools in our fight to provide clean air for all Californians and to meet our greenhouse gas reduction goals."

PUBLIC HEALTH BENEFITS
Not only is biodiesel valuable for environmental protection, but it also leads to cleaner air quality, especially in urban and other communities near major transportation corridors.

"Crimson's Bakersfield expansion means a greater availability of low-carbon, cleaner burning biodiesel for heavy-duty trucks and other diesel-based transportation and equipment," said Dean Florez, a former California state senate majority leader and current California Air Resources Board member. "This helps provide relief to communities such as those in the Central Valley and near California's ports and distribution facilities that are disproportionally threatened by the poor air quality that comes with high levels of truck traffic and other types of diesel-based transportation and equipment."

LOCAL AND REGIONAL ECONOMIC BENEFITS
The construction and expanded operations of the Crimson plant have also resulted in a boost to the local economy, said Crimson officials.

"Crimson spent tens of millions of dollars building this new ultra-advanced biodiesel plant and our Bakersfield facility spends additional tens of millions of dollars each year supporting an ecosystem of local and regional suppliers and repair and logistics providers, a level of ongoing economic impact you don't see with some other types of renewable energy projects in the area," said Simpson. With over 60 people employed at our Bakersfield facility, we also provide our local community with high paying jobs that come with full benefits and a major investment in training."
