International Living's Guide to the Greek Islands--Internationalliving.com

BALTIMORE, Oct. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Large, diverse, and visually stunning, Greece is an enthralling mixture of sun-drenched islands, towering mountains, buzzing cities, and timeless traditions. Wrapped in the warm embrace of the Aegean Sea, Greece was the world's first democracy, dating back to the 5th century B.C. Despite it's long history, it remains vibrant, welcoming, and full of surprises.

Whether as a short-term destination for a tourist visit or as a locale for aspiring expats looking for a longer-term escape, Greece makes sense. It offers outstanding year-round weather, affordable accommodation, superb food, friendly locals, and amazing history. And the islands surrounding the Greek mainland are awe-inspiring.

"From the Ionian Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, you could spend years island hopping and exploring without ever getting bored," says Lynn Roulo, International Living Correspondent.

Even within island clusters, each place has its own personality, unique character, and signature charm. This guide of the Greek islands highlights some of the major islands you might want to visit either for a holiday or when scouting out a new home.

Apart from the two largest islands of Crete and Evia, the Greek islands are grouped into six clusters:

The Cyclades islands are located in the southeast Aegean Sea.
The Ionian islands are in the west near Italy.
The Argo-Saronic islands are an Aegean Sea island cluster closest to Athens.
The North Aegean islands are found in the northeast Aegean Sea near the coast of Turkey.
The Sporades islands near Volos (northern mainland Greece) in the western Aegean Sea.
The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean Sea and the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Greece has long been a tourist magnet, but it's big enough that it's still possible to find that secret "paradise spot" away from the crowds. Even in the height of summer when the islands, beaches, and ancient ruins are typically brimming with visitors, folks can still discover under-the-radar destinations that provide relaxation and space.

Around 40% of the country's population lives in and around Athens, which means there's loads of room in other parts of the country, with more than 50,000 square miles and literally thousands of breath-taking islands to choose from.

"In the report, we've listed just 23 of the dozens of colorful, unique islands you'll find in Greece," notes Roulo. "From popular to remote, from polished to raw and rugged, there really is something for everyone within the Greek islands. And whether you are seeking a relaxing holiday or a brand-new life, Greece has a way of meeting you just where you are and giving you just what you need."
