Flexibility is Critical for Spring Testing and Beyond; It is Time to Transform Assessment and Accountability Systems

PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the release of NWEA's research on impact of COVID-19 school disruptions on learning, the not-for-profit research and assessment provider announced today K-12 assessment policy recommendations for the incoming Biden administration and Congress. The recommendations focus on innovation, flexibility and more relevance to teaching and learning.

"The pandemic has illuminated persistent inequities and while statewide assessment and related accountability systems have helped to move the needle somewhat over the past 20 years, these systems have not eliminated opportunity and achievement gaps," said Aaliyah Samuel, Executive Vice President of Government Affairs and Partnerships at NWEA. "Given the impacts of the pandemic, it's time ? now more than ever ? to modernize the system to one that is focused on action."

NWEA's recommends:

"Federal and state leaders have an opportunity to reimagine their roles and evolve beyond auditors of education systems to active supporters of improved learning," said Jason Mendenhall, President of State Solutions Division at NWEA. "The pandemic has moved up the urgency to address these lingering issues and the disconnects between information and action. As systems of teaching and learning evolve, so too should our assessment and accountability systems."
