Allergy Partners Discussed Holiday Allergy Season and How to Prepare for Them

ASHEVILLE, N.C., Dec. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As the weather turns cold and the calendar moves from Thanksgiving, the Holiday season is just around the corner. While this year's festivities will be smaller than usual, we will soon start to retrieve the decorations from the attic and to plan for the big cookie bake. While certainly my favorite time of the year, the Holidays and present challenges for allergy sufferers.

1. Foods: Cakes, cookies, candies and sweets are just part of holiday fun. For those with food allergies, hidden ingredients like nuts or dairy. Perhaps more than any time of the year, its important for those with food allergies to always ask about ingredients before taking a bite. If the host is not sure, it's best to politely decline!

2. Christmas trees: Allergic to Christmas trees?!? Trees may have mold spores that can trigger allergies and asthma, while artificial trees can carry dust after prolonged storage. It may be a good idea to air out the tree in a dry place like the garage before bringing it inside.

3. All those ornaments: Boxes and boxes of decorations are in my attic and, try as we might, the things get dusty. When moving boxes, wear a mask and clean off dusty items outside or in a well-ventilated area.

4. Candles: Almost as important as the sights of the season are the smells. For some people, however, strong scents and perfumes can trigger sneezing, runny nose and even asthma symptoms.

5. Pets: When visiting friends and relatives, it's a good idea to find out who has pets and who is pet allergic. It's always a good idea to take extra precautions such as keeping pets outside, taking an antihistamine before arriving, and being sure to have your rescue inhaler.

Most importantly, don't let the Allergy Grinch steal your Holiday fun. Taking some time to spot potential problems upfront and being prepared can help make the Holidays happy for everyone.
