Rick Parnell, CEO of the Foundation for Climate Restoration, Issues Statement on the House Select Committee's Climate Crisis Action Plan to Reach Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

WASHINGTON, July 1, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The Democrats have issued a bold, new climate crisis plan that commits to "achieving net-negative emissions during the 2nd half of the century." This is a great first step. While we appreciate their focus on this important goal, we cannot put off net-negative initiatives until 2050: we must begin removing atmospheric CO2 now so that we can be carbon-negative as soon as possible. We can do this by implementing the carbon-removal technologies that are now available and new solutions that are rapidly emerging to remove the trillion tons of excess CO2 in our atmosphere. This is the only way to ensure a habitable planet by 2050.

Even if we achieve net-zero emissions under this plan, 95% of the excess CO2, the main driver of climate change and global temperature rise, will still be in our atmosphere. Climate restoration practices? the technologies designed to safely and permanently remove the excess CO2? need to be our foremost commitment. These practices, done in concert with net-zero initiatives, are essential to any work we do in response to the climate emergency.
