Saint Joseph's University: Spencer-RIMS Challenge Provides ?Real-World' Experience (AM BestTV)

A student team from St. Joseph's University took first place for a second-straight year. Teams were asked to develop a strategy to bring students back to the University of Dayton for the fall semester amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Michael E. Angelina, executive director, Maguire Academy, St. Joseph's University, said the competition is very valuable for students' development.

"Making the Spencer team is a very big prestigious event for the students at St. Joseph's University," said Angelina. "This competition sets the students up nicely for their careers. It shows them how to work on teams. It shows them how to pick each other up. It shows them how to meet a deadline. These deadlines are hard and fast and they need to submit the 10-page paper on time. If they are an hour late, they are out and all the work they have done is for naught."

One of the team members, Kayla Cecchine, discussed her experience in partaking in the competition.

"In the classroom, there are opportunities. We do case studies. We do different projects, and we present those as well, but this case study allows you to really grow over an entire year. We started this back in January, when the world was so different. Then we were able to watch what we created and what we modeled come true. That was definitely really unique ... these were real-world problems that we were analyzing."
