Media Advisory - English-speaking Community United Against Assault on Our Education Rights

MONTREAL, Jan. 31, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ - The steering committee of APPELE-Québec ? the Alliance for the Promotion of Public English-language Education in Québec ? invites you to a press conference where a wide range of community leaders and organizations will reiterate its strong stand against Bill 40 - An Act to amend mainly the Education Act with regard to school organization and governance and propose a path forward.

With Education Minister Jean-François Roberge leading the charge, the Coalition Avenir Québec government clearly intends to proceed with the adoption of this contentious piece of legislation that would abolish our school boards. Together with our community stakeholders we maintain that English-speaking Quebecers have a constitutional right to control and manage our schools. We remain resolute in our opposition to Bill 40. At this critical juncture, our community believes it is time to take a public stand against this assault on our rights.

When:

Monday, February 3, 11 a.m.

Where:

Côte Saint-Luc Aquatic and Community Centre

5794 Parkhaven, Côte Saint-Luc, QC H4W 0A4

On hand for the press conference will be former minister and MNA Geoffrey Kelley, chair of APPELE-Québec; retired senator and respected journalist Joan Fraser; and Kevin Shaar, an attorney and parent with children enrolled in the Western Quebec School Board. Also present will be representatives of the steering committee, which is composed of the Quebec Community Groups Network, the Quebec English School Boards Association, the Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations, the English Parents' Committee Association, and supporting organizations.
