Teacher Created Materials Donates Over 5,000 Pounds of Food to Feed Hungry Children

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Dec. 11, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For the fifth year in a row, Teacher Created Materials has supported the work of Caterina's Club and local radio station KFI AM 640 by collecting pasta and pasta sauce in the annual pastathon. Every year, Caterina's Club runs the pastathon to gather food to support its efforts in serving over 25,000 fresh, nutritionally balanced meals to underprivileged children every week at 89 sites throughout LA and Orange Counties.

Teacher Created Materials is a leading educational publisher whose mission is to make teaching more effective and learning more fun by helping to create a world in which children love to learn. However, they know that this is not possible when children come to school hungry. Across California, 1.7 million children are affected by food insecurity on a daily basis. This means that approximately one in five children do not know where their next meal will come from. Studies show that food insecurity is linked to lower reading and mathematics test scores.

This year, departments across TCM competed to see who could bring in the most pasta and pasta sauce. The winning department received the Golden Apple Award. "It's fun to compete for bragging rights at the office, but that's not really why I look forward to this annual event," said one employee. "I used to teach children who struggled with food insecurity, and I saw first hand the challenge that brings them. The true reward for me is knowing that our donations are helping kids in our local community receive a healthy meal every day."

"We love the alignment between Caterina's Club and Teacher Created Materials' Mission and Vision," said Deanne Mendoza, Owner of Teacher Created Materials. "By feeding over 4,000 hungry children nightly in LA and Orange Counties, a teacher's time is more effective and learning is more fun. And together, along with the hard-working teachers and principals out there, we are working to create a world in which children love to learn!"

The pastathon ended on December 6, with a live broadcast from the KFI radio team at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Teacher Created Materials donated 5,119 pounds of pasta and sauce at the event. Local community members also supported in TCM's donations, with the largest donation coming from Bell Intermediate School and Garden Park Elementary School in Garden Grove, California. Students from those schools donated a combined 1,200 pounds of pasta and sauce. And this year, the warehouse was named the winning TCM department, donating a total of 1,165 pounds.
