World's First Portal Site on G20 Actions and Progress on Marine Plastic Litter Launched by Ministry of the Environment Japan and IGES

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), together with the Ministry of the Environment Japan, is pleased to announce the launch of a portal site, "Towards Osaka Blue Ocean Vision - G20 Implementation Framework for Actions on Marine Plastic Litter", on 23 November. This site, the first of its kind, comprehensively covers actions and progress by G20 members and outreach countries, as well as international discussions and countermeasures on marine plastic litter.

In June 2019, at the G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transitions and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth, held in Karuizawa, the "G20 Implementation Framework for Actions on Marine Plastic Litter", a global framework for marine plastic litter, was established. ?

With Japan holding the G20 Presidency for 2019, the Ministry of the Environment Japan created a portal site to share and accumulate knowledge and experiences from each of the G20 members, and to contribute to solving the plastic waste issue in a coordinated manner on a global scale. At IGES, the Sustainable Consumption and Production Area made extensive and major contributions to related international conferences and processes, including the G20 meeting in Karuizawa and the recent G20 Resource Efficiency Dialogue & Follow-up of G20 Implementation Framework for Actions on Marine Plastic Litter held in October in Tokyo. IGES also played a central role in producing an integrated report on measures and policies to tackle marine plastic litter by the individual G20 members and other participating countries.

IGES will continue to promote practical research for policymaking, and direct its efforts to boost interest and understanding among businesses, local governments, NGOs and citizens on the hot topic of plastic litter in our oceans. IGES also aims to provide valuable support on actions for sustainable society worldwide.
