Live Power Gains New Patent for Next-Generation Technology for Power Grid Monitoring

BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 22, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today Live Power announces the issuance of US Patent No. 10,393,777 related to real-time monitoring of the power grid for the purpose of determining the spot price for electric power.

The patent, issued as of August 29, 2019, for this next generation technology enables several disruptive differences from current grid monitoring, including:

"As the power grid evolves with the adoption of more renewable energy, electric vehicles and microgrids, this technology gives Live Power a significant advantage. We are excited about the speed and resolution of this data to help us inform the evolving power markets," said Bill Townsend, Live Power CEO.

This new technology is best described as a nodal network of sensors plugged into standard power outlets at different locations. The data gathered provides the basis for determining power flows from any one node to another over all possible paths. The patent is based on analyzing the difference in timing of a power waveform such as voltage waveform at different locations.

The inventor, Pal Even Gaarder, a Norwegian physicist, demonstrated this invention in the field in Texas during 2015 using the Singleton-Jewett high voltage power line. The grid operator in Texas provides actual values from their system every 5 minutes which is an excellent control dataset. The new technology proved to be highly accurate while producing nearly instantaneous data which will eventually translate to faster decision making by customers.

About Live Power:
Live Power is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado and operates a network of 100s of sensors across 23 states and 3 regional markets (PJM, ERCOT and MISO). Data from these sensors is sold to utilities, generators and financial institutions that buy and sell electric power in the wholesale market. These customers use the data to manage their positions in this very volatile commodity. Live Power was founded by Gaarder who came to the U.S. in 2014 after building a similar grid sensing network in Scandinavia. Townsend, the current Live Power CEO, has more than 20 years of experience in building commodity trading data and applications.
