AECC Publishes Technical Report, "Driving Data to the Edge: The Challenge of Traffic Distribution"

The Automotive Edge Computing Consortium (AECC), a non-profit consortium of cross-industry players working to drive best practices for the coming vehicle and computing convergence, today announced the publication of the Driving Data to the Edge: The Challenge of Traffic Distribution technical report, available as a free downloadable document. The AECC Technical Solutions Working Group (WG2) members wrote the authoritative best practices guide to provide the ecosystem with actionable recommendations needed to deploy emerging services solutions that meet major new data communications requirements.

While new connected vehicle services, such as intelligent driving and high-definition mapping, are expected to be the fast-growing industry segment demanding mobile machine-to-machine connectivity, many organizations face the challenge of designing and operating communication networks and computing ecosystems that will efficiently deliver and process unprecedented and ever-increasing volumes of data. The AECC technical paper offers recommendations for how communication networks and computing resources could be orchestrated to enable secure, cost-effective data delivery and processing on a global scale.

"Members of the AECC are continuously working together to articulate a path for addressing critical challenges in meeting the industry's needs. This report helps identify the ways connected vehicles can deliver anticipated benefits to vehicle owners and users, vehicle OEMs, and the ecosystem of service providers," said Ken-ichi Murata, president and chairperson of the AECC, and project general manager of the ITS & Connected Management Division at Toyota. "This paper is the first step in the process. We would like to thank the AECC Technical Solutions Working Group members for all their hard work."

Specifically, the AECC has proposed a "distributed computing on localized networks" solution concept and architecture to ensure service flexibility, efficiency and the continued evolution of the automotive industry. The solution concept has three key components: Localized Network, Distributed Computing, and Local Data Integration. This initial technical report focuses on three important issues related to the Localized Network aspect:

By sharing relevant findings, requirements, and technology solutions with standards organizations and the public, the AECC aims to encourage the development of connected vehicle best practices and new use cases to accelerate the growth of the entire industry. The AECC's vision is to create a new era where connected vehicles utilize the full benefits of high-volume data for the evolution of the connected world from improving safety, sustainability, and reliability to enhancing the user experience.

About the AECC

The Automotive Edge Computing Consortium (AECC) is an association of cross-industry, global leaders working to explore the rapidly evolving and significant data and communications needs involved in instrumenting billions of vehicles worldwide. The AECC's goal is to find more efficient ways to support the high-volume data and intelligent services needed for distributed computing and network architecture and infrastructure. The AECC's members are key players in the automotive, high-speed mobile network, edge computing, wireless technology, distributed computing and artificial intelligence markets.
