Interim HealthCare Inc. Honors Caregivers this Labor Day

SUNRISE, Fla., Aug. 27, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Labor Day honors the contributions and achievements of American workers, and Interim HealthCare Inc., a leading national franchisor of home care, hospice and healthcare staffing, is recognizing the important work of caregivers across the nation by supporting the need for them to care for themselves in what is one of the most emotional, yet compassionate jobs in the workforce today.

With over 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, the need for caregivers is more important than ever. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the overall employment of home health aides and personal care aides will grow 41 percent from 2016 to 2026, which is faster than the average growth of all other occupations combined. According to AARP, approximately 43.5 million caregivers have provided unpaid care to an adult or child, and 34.2 million Americans have provided unpaid care to an adult age 50 or older. The pressing need for caregivers will continue to mount as more and more baby boomers age.

"As we take a moment this Labor Day to honor the achievements of American workers, we have an opportunity to reflect on the millions of people who care for our growing baby boomer population," said Jennifer Sheets, Interim HealthCare CEO and President. "At Interim HealthCare, I see the incredible work our mission-driven team of caregivers do every day, and I think it is so important that they, and the millions of informal caregivers across the nation, take opportunities to also care for themselves."

This work is powerful, hands-on and at times can be stressful for both professional caregivers and family caregivers alike. Caregiver burnout can present itself with the following signs: Unusual fatigue, anxiety, depression, strained personal relationships, lower immune response and potential health issues like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.

Below are a few pieces of advice Interim HealthCare Inc. offers caregivers across the nation:

1.    Share your experience: Today there are millions of caregivers providing care for their loved ones. It's important to build a network with other caregivers who are also managing the same daily challenges as you. Consider joining an online support group or organization where you can share some of your learnings with others.

2.    Take a break: Stepping away from your responsibilities as a caregiver can be difficult, but caregivers deserve time to relax and rejuvenate. Not only will this time off benefit you as the caregiver, but experts say both you and your loved ones will benefit if you take it.

3.    Prioritize your health: To best care for others, you must care for yourself. Many caregivers face increased rates of physical ailments and increased tendency to develop a serious illness. A healthy diet and regular exercise can be simple ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. And in stressful times, meditation and yoga can be very beneficial.

4.    Know when you need help: Caregiving can be stressful, especially when you are also caring for other family members and managing a career. Studies show that 26 percent of caregivers say the work is hard on them emotionally. Respite care can be a great option for those looking for extra help caring for their loved ones.
