ND Supplies Inc. announces today they are partnering with US-based Calyx Containers to introduce environmentally friendly plastic packaging to the Canadian cannabis market, given the prevalent waste that currently exists in the industry.

RICHMOND, BC, Aug. 27, 2019 /CNW/ - Every time a consumer buys legal cannabis from a licensed dispensary, licensed producer, or an official government controlled provincial outlet, the products are extensively over packaged.  Although this is a new and booming industry, labeling and packaging regulations have resulted in many cannabis products being sold in multiple layers of plastic and packaging, leading to excessive garbage and waste.

Degradation testing using the ASTM D5511 method has shown accelerated degradation of Calyx's containers by microbes found in landfills. Tests are generally conducted using 20% to 30% solids content; solids content in naturally wetter landfills range from 55% to 65%, while the driest landfills may reach 93%. Actual biodegradation rates will vary in biologically-active landfills according to the type of plastic used, the product configuration, and the solid content, temperature and moisture levels of the landfill.
