National Japanese American Historical Society and the Nihonmachi Street Fair Hosts First Movie Night in San Francisco Japantown

SAN FRANCISCO, August 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On Saturday, August 3, the Nihonmachi Street Fair, "NSF," the original "melting pot" of street fairs, is proud to announce a special night time showing of the 91st Academy Award nominated movie for Best Animation called "MIRAI." This special showing will be the first time that the NSF in partnership with the National Japanese American Historical Society will hold a night time event at the San Francisco Japantown Peace Plaza. This event is funded in part by the Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Fund and is made possible with the support of local Japantown organizations (Japantown Community Benefit District, National Japanese American Historical Society, New People, Japan Center Garage and Nihonmachi Street Fair) pooling their efforts to make this a reality.

Grace Horikiri, Executive Director of the Nihonmachi Street Fair, says, "We are grateful to collaboratively share an award winning animated movie from Japan with visitors of the NSF and community members of Japantown."

The movie, MIRAI, is from acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, Wolf Children) and Japan's Studio Chizu comes MIRAI (https://gkids.com/films/mirai/), a daringly original story of love passed down through generations. When four-year-old Kun meets his new baby sister, his world is turned upside down. Named Mirai (meaning "future"), the baby quickly wins the hearts of Kun's entire family. As his mother returns to work, and his father struggles to run the household, Kun becomes increasingly jealous of baby Mirai... until one day he storms off into the garden, where he encounters strange guests from the past and future ? including his sister Mirai, as a teenager. Together, Kun and teenage Mirai go on a journey through time and space, uncovering their family's incredible story.

The showing will start at 8:30pm and seating will be first-come, first-serve at the Japantown Peace Plaza.

About Nihonmachi Street Fair:
Founded in 1973, the Nihonmachi Street Fair was hatched as an idea to provide leadership and mentorship opportunities for the youth of Japantown and to honor the cultural heritage that was, at the time, at risk of being displaced. Since then, the annual event has grown from a four-booth affair to a two-day event expected to draw over 30,000 attendees in 2018.

What makes this street fair a uniquely San Francisco event is the broader cultural context participants can experience in addition to traditional Asian-Pacific influences. The Nihonmachi Street Fair organizers have a long history of including local entertainment that have spanned genres from Taiko to hip-hop to salsa, rock, and jazz.
