MTI America's Director of Clinical Innovation to Speak about Human Trafficking at CMSA's National Conference

MTI America announced that the company's director of clinical innovation, Jeanine Zukerman, will speak at an annual conference for workers' compensation nurse case managers about the importance of identifying and helping potential victims of human trafficking.

Zukerman will address attendees of the Case Management Society of America's annual conference, held in Las Vegas June 10-14 at the Mirage Hotel & Casino.

In her speech, titled "Human Trafficking for Healthcare Providers," Zukerman will discuss the ethical, practical and legal aspects of identifying and reporting potential human trafficking activity.

A form of modern-day slavery, human trafficking is a crime involving the exploitation of someone for the purposes of compelled labor or commercial sex acts. Trafficked victims are often foreign nationals and younger people.

"We tend to think human trafficking happens in other people's neighborhoods and to other people, but it often happens just as easily and often right around us," Zukerman says.

Those in the healthcare industry are in a unique position to identify the physical and emotional signs that someone may be a victim of trafficking.

"As nurses and other care professionals in the healthcare industry, we're rightfully held to high ethical standards that include reporting potential crimes such as domestic violence," Zukerman says. "It's important for us also to know what to look for, and what to do about, human trafficking."

Florida is one of two states where nurses are required by law to complete training on how to identify and report potential crimes such as human trafficking. Attendees of Zukerman's speech will receive relevant continuing education credits, including ethics.

Zukerman is currently president of the Central Florida chapter of the Case Management Society of America, which represents health care case managers around the country.
