Public Defense Attorney Bre Kidman First to the Fight Against Sen. Susan Collins for Maine

SACO, Maine, May 21, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Bre Kidman, a 31-year-old attorney and artist based in Saco, Maine, has filed their candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, making them the first Democrat to enter the 2020 Senate race against Susan Collins.

While Fox News and The Daily Wire rushed to report on the candidate's "queer feminist mermaid" performance art persona, Kidman brings to the race policy experience from fellowships at the National Center for Transgender Equality and Maine's Permanent Commission on the Status of Women. Kidman also completed an externship with Disability Rights Maine during law school, interned with Planned Parenthood of Northern New England Action Fund, and was one of the first volunteer patient escorts at Planned Parenthood's Portland office. Kidman's campaign will focus on optimizing the use of tax dollars and fostering public engagement with the democratic process through reforms to criminal justice and campaign finance.

Bre Kidman was born and raised in New England and their family's Maine roots trace back to the 1700's. A 2016 graduate of the University of Maine School of Law, Kidman works as a court-appointed criminal defense attorney through the Maine Commission on Indigent Legal Services. Outside working hours, Kidman organizes arts events with a focus on consent education and body positivity with MESH Portland. Kidman identifies as nonbinary and, if elected, would be the first transgender senator.

"We cannot keep electing the same people and expecting the system to improve," said Kidman. "We have a democratic republic that was built for something much more powerful than red-versus-blue bickering and it's time we started using it to find solutions for a future long beyond the next election cycle. We need to get rid of career politicians and invest in a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. We need to find economically viable ways to protect our environment. We need to ensure our youth aren't buried in student debt and medical bills before they even get a chance to begin their lives. We need to stop hemorrhaging money into a prison industrial complex with no possible return on investment and, instead, invest in diversionary programs for people struggling with mental illness and addiction to get the help they need to become taxpaying citizens. We need to stand up and say that the way things are going is not good enough and that Millennials are ready to jump in and do the work. Maine deserves more than a career politician in the senate. All of us do."
