Florida Law Highlights the Importance of Choosing Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, Says Dr. J Plastic Surgery

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., April 22, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- An April 9 article on FLAPOL discusses a proposed new Florida law which will require area clinics to register with the state's Department of Health; it would also prevent doctors from opening up new clinics for a period of five years if their prior clinic was shut down due to violations. The bill comes in the wake of news coverage recounting a series of deaths at dubious cosmetic surgery centers overseen by the same doctor. Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., known to his patients as Dr. J, says that such laws point out the need for the public, and prospective plastic surgery patients specifically, to understand the importance of considering only board-certified plastic surgeons.

To start with, says Dr. J, far too few people understand the crucial difference between a plastic surgeon and a so-called cosmetic surgeon. He says that before they are allowed to call themselves plastic surgeons, doctors must go through years of additional rigorous training honing their skills and broadening their medical knowledge so that they are prepared to enter one of the most demanding of all medical specialties. Meanwhile, says Dr. J, just about any physician who wants to is allowed to use the title of cosmetic surgeon ? and they don't necessarily have to be board certified. Indeed, even if a cosmetic surgeon is board-certified, he notes, it will be in something other than plastic surgery. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is currently the only qualified body for certifying plastic surgeons according to the National Board of Medical Specialties, adds Dr. J.

Dr. J. notes that the importance of ensuring that anyone performing plastic surgery is a plastic surgeon who is also board certified should be obvious, but it's about more than safety ? it's also about outcomes. He notes that a rhinoplasty (nose job), for example, is a very safe and routine procedure when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, but there is also an anesthetic side which is harder to quantify. Not only are unqualified doctors dangerous, says Dr. J, their outcomes tend to be a great deal less attractive. These doctors may ask for smaller fees, he adds, but being disappointed with your results is no bargain at all.

Dr. J's qualifications as a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon can be seen online. Interested readers may call his office at (310) 228-3151 to set an initial consultation.
