Cambodian Schools Launch Peace Education Curriculum

LONG BEACH, Calif., Feb. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On February 21st at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, an anticipated 1,000 guests, including the Minister of Education of Cambodia, officials in government and education field, and students will take part in the 2019 Grand Opening Ceremony of HWPL Department of Peace Education in the Kingdom of Cambodia. Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) is an international non-governmental organization working for peace. Long Beach volunteers of HWPL plan to integrate peace education in the Cambodian community in Long Beach, California this year as well.

Cambodia citizens have looked forward to the opening of the peace department since last year, when the Ministry of Education of Cambodia and HWPL signed a Memorandum of Understanding to introduce nationwide peace education and develop related policies and programs.

"From this launching ceremony, we step forward to the implementation level to integrate ideas of peace education into the curriculums in Cambodian schools," said H.E. Hang Chuon Naron, the Minister of Education.

Even on an international level, Cambodia is finding ways to enforce peace. Through the Ministry of Justice and Cultural Human Resources Council of Cambodia, the nation will host a peace forum called "The Place of Cooperative Governance Building between Government and Civic Groups for the UN Adoption of the DPCW." Through this effort, government officials and civic groups will seek for ways to develop principles of peace into a binding international order based on HWPL's main initiative, the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).

Within 10 articles and 38 clauses, the DPCW addresses principles of conflict resolution and international cooperation for peacebuilding such as prohibition of use of force, peaceful dispute settlement, and spreading a culture of peace.

"This series of peace events strengthens cooperative partnership between the government of Cambodia and HWPL, international network for development through education, and overall facilitation of Cambodia-Korean friendship," said Sang-dae Lee. "On 21st and 22nd, February, Chairman of HWPL and peace activist Man Hee Lee will appeal to Cambodia by urging that all people become messengers of peace to achieve a world without war."

This will be the third collaborative meeting between HWPL and the Great Supreme Patriarch of Kingdom of Cambodia, who had prior international exchanges including Religious Youth Peace Camp in Cambodia, in 2017 and the 2016 HWPL Peace Summit in South Korea.
