Scientifically Verified BMPs Support Grower Emission Reductions of up to 35 Per Cent

KATOWICE, Poland, Dec. 10, 2018 /CNW/ - Fertilizer Canada urges the delegates of COP24 to implement the 4R Climate Smart Strategy. The 4R Climate Smart Strategy is an easily adaptable, science-based solution to agricultural impacts which incorporates 4R Nutrient Stewardship (Right Source @ Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place®) for growers under the guidance of an accredited professional.

Supporting the 4R Climate Smart Strategy, Fertilizer Canada has scientifically verified 10 4R Nutrient Stewardship best management practices (BMPs) that allow growers to confidently implement sustainable agriculture on their farms. It is through these BMPs that growers around the world can achieve emission reductions of up to 35 per cent ? among other environmental benefits ? while increasing yields and profitability.

Culminating three years of extensive research and published in the Key Findings of the Canadian 4R Research Network report, nine leading Canadian scientists have verified the benefits of 10 4R BMPs in various cropping systems. For example, research shows that growers can reduce emissions by applying fertilizer in-soil with inhibitors as a best practice.

"Continued research strengthens the science behind the 4R Nutrient Stewardship framework, creates further understanding of its ability to reduce emissions and supports its validity on an international scale," said Clyde Graham, Executive Vice President of Fertilizer Canada. "While this research was conducted in Canada, the 4R framework is universally applicable and can be implemented globally in any region."

With widespread implementation of these Best Management Practices, progress towards global sustainability targets can be made. Graham is available for media interviews from Katowice, Poland until December 12 and afterwards from Ottawa, Canada. Please contact Kelly McCarthy at the coordinates below to arrange an interview.
