CUPW shuts down most of Manitoba, continues strikes in Edmonton, Ontario and New Brunswick

OTTAWA, Nov. 16, 2018 /CNW/ - While negotiations continue, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) began strikes on Friday in the main cities of Manitoba: Winnipeg (except the processing plant), Brandon, Portage la Prairie, The Pas, Dauphin, Flin Flon and Thompson. Strikes also started Friday in Edmonton, Alta. and in Port Hope, Orangeville and Markham, Ont. Strikes also continue in Moncton and Saint John, N.B., and in one letter carrier depot in downtown Toronto.

Meanwhile, strikes have ended in Victoria, Winnipeg, Montreal, St. John's, and in other locations in Ontario.

The strikes are now into their fourth week and have touched virtually every Canada Post facility and every Canadian address so far.

Service impacts as strikes have trailers backlogged

Canada Post has been working hard to minimize the service impact to Canadians, but the union's strikes continue to cause unprecedented backlogs in our delivery network. As a result, customers could see delays of several days.

Mail and parcels will not be delivered or picked up in impacted areas while the union continues their strike activity. We thank our customers for their continued patience and apologize for the inconvenience this is causing.

Canada Post tabled significant, time-limited offer in effort to resolve negotiations

On November 14, Canada Post tabled a significant, time-limited offer to CUPW in an effort to resolve negotiations and return our operations to normal. The offer improves pay increases for all employees, and includes the extraordinary measure of a signing bonus of up to $1,000. It also addresses many of CUPW's concerns around health and safety and workloads. Given the urgency created by the backlogs and rapidly oncoming holiday volumes, the offer will be open for acceptance until 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018.
