M. Alan Menter, MD, Recognized as Leader in Psoriatic Disease Research

DALLAS, Nov. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- M. Alan Menter, MD, is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Recently featured in The Wall Street Journal, Dr. Menter is celebrated as one of the most cited doctors in the field of psoriasis. This achievement has earned him the title of Top Doctor, which he has proudly maintained since 2004. As a dermatologist with Baylor Scott and White in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Menter is committed to providing the highest level of medical care to his patients. At the present time, his psoriasis clinical practice includes more than 1,800 patients on systemic plus biologic therapies. However, like many innovators, Dr. Menter also dedicates considerable time toward completing research in his areas of expertise. Throughout the course of his career, he has authored a total of six books, 12 book chapters and 394 articles. One of his most notable publications is "The First Gene Discovery for Psoriasis," which was published in the Journal "Science", 1994. Unsurprisingly, Dr. Menter previously served as an editorial board member for the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology between 1993 and 2003. His written psoriasis works have been cited approximately 3,900 times over the past 12 years, the highest in the world.

A native of England, Dr. Menter completed formal education at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, receiving a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1966. He then joined Johannesburg General Hospital, where he completed several internships, the last of which focusing on dermatology. Over the subsequent course of three and a half years, Dr. Menter completed a residency in dermatology at Pretoria General Hospital, which culminated in him receiving a Master of Medicine in dermatology in 1971. He then returned to England, where he completed two fellowships in dermatology at Guy's Hospital and St. John's Hospital for Diseases of the Skin both in London. He was ultimately drawn to the United States by the promise of a fellowship with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas in 1975.

Looking back, Dr. Menter recalls being inspired to pursue a career as a dermatologist because of his lifelong interest in psoriasis and psoriatic disease research. Since entering the field, his research on psoriasis has examined everything from ultraviolet phototherapy and biologic therapy to the mapping of genetic patterns to predict if a person is at risk of developing psoriasis. Dr. Menter helped found the International Psoriasis Council in 2004 to raise international awareness of psoriasis as a serious immune-medicated disease that significantly impacts patients' quality of life. He has held leadership roles with a variety of international conferences, such as when he served as president of the Third World Congress Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritic Conference in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2012.

A diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. Menter currently serves as chairman of the residency program at the Baylor Scott and White in Dallas and has been the medical director of the Psoriasis Center since 1979. He recently joined the Texas A&M Health Science Center as a member of the principal faculty in 2012. One year later, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Psoriasis Foundation.

In recognition of his unrelenting commitment to medical practice and research, Dr. Menter was recently selected to receive the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. In August, 2018 he was nominated as the Top Dermatologist of the year for 2018 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). He has also been named a Distinguished Humanitarian and featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. He was twice named the recipient of a Presidential Citation Award from the American Academy of Dermatology in 2015 and 2018.
