Mayor Libby Schaaf to Open West Coast Minority Women Professionals Conference

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, October 27, 2018, the national Minority Women Professionals Conference are MVPs series, hosted by Inspire Health Solutions, will be making its West Coast stop in the city of Oakland, CA.  Fresh off the heels of a successful East Coast Conference at Harvard Medical School, the West Coast conference will be kicked off by Mayor Libby Schaaf, the 50th Mayor of the City of Oakland.

With sponsorship from the California Healthcare Foundation and the California Academy of Family Physicians, the Association of Minority Women Professionals will be convening approximately 100 women across the West Coast to celebrate women of diverse backgrounds and experiences. This conference is the 7th in the United States and will be held at the historic Oakland Asian Cultural Center. It will feature a series of guest speakers, workshops, networking and mentorship opportunities aimed to inspire and empower Minority Women Professionals (MWPs), while also equipping them with essential tools and skills to "survive and thrive" in their professions.

West Coast Conference headliners include Mayor Libby Schaaf, Sheila Lewis, co-Founder and CEO of Ashton212 and international women's empowerment leader, and Zahra Billoo, Esq., Executive Director of the Council on American Islamic Relations San Francisco Bay Area Office. Additional highlights include inspiration by Maame Afon Yelbert-Sai, international coach and women's leader, Chair of the African Women's Development Fund-USA and vocalist.

With knowledge of intersectional discrimination that exists, the conference creator, Dr. J. Nwando Olayiwola, published the book Minority Women Professionals (MWPs) are MVPs! in 2016, highlighting "Ten secret ingredients in the secret sauce of MWPs". This movement was shared as a strategy to dismantle institutional discrimination in the Lancet earlier this year, and the cities of San Francisco and Oakland, CA both declared January 28 as Minority Women Professionals Day in 2017.

"There is no time better than now," said Dr. Olayiwola. "Minority women professionals are so essential to communities across the nation, and our diversity is an asset if we leverage it correctly. What an honor to have Mayor Schaaf recognize the movement in 2017 and now kick off the conference in 2018!"
