Londonderry, NH, Democrats Decry Crucial Absentee Ballot Error

LONDONDERRY, N.H., Oct. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In a close race for the local New Hampshire House Senate seat in District 14 - where incumbent Senator Sharon Carson is seeking re-election - her Democratic opponent, Tammy Siekmann appeared on absentee ballots, sent to US Citizens and the military overseas, listed as a Libertarian candidate. According to a voter affected by the incident, the Londonderry Town Clerk's office acknowledged the error in the first batch of ballots and have sent amended ballots to voters via electronic mail. However, the Democratic candidate fears this was a deliberate attempt to interfere with voters' choice of a Democratic State Senator.

"Thus far there has been no official communication of the error to me, the candidate, nor to the office of Rockingham County Democrats. We would also like to know what measures were taken to amend the ballots, and the expectations our constituents should have of their votes being accurately counted," said State Senate candidate, Tammy Siekmann, who is also on the Auburn and Hudson ballots. "The absentee ballots in both Auburn and Hudson are accurate. I am a long-time resident of Londonderry, and have been a known Democratic activist and volunteer for years. Why should the town I reside in make that kind of mistake?" Siekmann is also the Chair of the Londonderry Democrats.

The absentee ballot listed Siekmann in the column of Libertarian candidates, leaving a blank where the Democratic State Senate candidate's name should have appeared. "Our voters expect free and fair elections and deserve respect, and I demand an explanation from Londonderry election Officials," stated Siekmann.

If, as expected, some absentee voters do not fill out the amended ballot, votes meant for the Democratic candidate may be lost and not accurately recorded in the November 6 midterm election. In the primary election, the difference between the two candidates was under 500 votes, with Carson leading in number of votes.
