Summer Fun Guide's 7 Cool, Unique Museums in Ontario!

TORONTO, Aug. 02, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Summer Fun Guide (https://www.summerfunguide.ca/), Ontario's online tourism directory, lists thousands of things to do and places to stay in Ontario. One of the things you can find is a long list of great museums. While many of us know about Ottawa's national museums and other major museums like the Royal Ontario Museum, Summer Fun Guide highlights 7 you may never have heard of.

  1. Diefenbunker: Canada's Cold War Museum & National Historic Site was a top-secret underground bunker, meant to protect Canadian government leaders from nuclear attack during the Cold War. (Ottawa)
  2. Military Communications and Electronics Museum displays Canada's military communications and electronics from confederation to the present day & also houses a large vehicle gallery, a German ENIGMA machine and three of the original 1/2 scale models used to design the Vimy Ridge Memorial. (Kingston, Eastern ON)
  3. Amherstburg Freedom Museum commemorates the "Underground Railroad" in 2 historic buildings and a main exhibition centre. From 1800-1860, Amherstburg was a chief entry point for 50,000 runaways fleeing slavery & oppression in the US. This Museum educates about the Railroad and increases Black awareness, and pride. (Amherstburg, SW ON)
  4. Anne of Green Gables at Bala's Museum honours Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables, in a restored 1920's home where the author holidayed in 1922. Children can dress in costume (free freckles) and view the boat from the "Anne" movie as well as Mathew's buggy and LMM's silver tea set. Lots of photo ops! (Bala, Central ON)
  5. Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre lets you experience how airplanes really work in this hands-on, kid-friendly Flight Centre. Climb aboard a vintage aircraft, feel like you're battling a Forest Fire in ?Wildfires! A 3-D Adventure', send Morse code messages from a 1940s ranger's office, climb an actual fire tower, spot the forest fire & radio a warning in the ranger office below. (Sault Ste. Marie, Northern ON)
  6. Toronto's First Post Office, 1834, is the oldest purpose-built and only surviving post office that was part of the British Royal Mail in Canada. It became a museum when a historic block of buildings at Adelaide & George Streets was restored. Now, you can visit and write a letter with a quill pen, seal it with wax and send it to a friend! (Toronto)
  7. Niagara Historical Society Museum, which began in 1896, contains one of Ontario's most important museum collections. Because Niagara-on-the-Lake welcomed refugees, in addition to being Upper Canada's capital, a war zone and a tourist destination, the area played a major role in the development of Canada.

"Ontario has some incredible museums including several major national museums in Ottawa," says Elisa Morton Palter, one of the publishers of Summer Fun Guide. "But there are a surprising number of really interesting smaller ones that you shouldn't miss," says co-publisher Shari Wert.
