MEDIA ADVISORY: Students available to comment ahead of 2017 Federal Budget
Ottawa, Feb. 27, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Federation of Students is looking for meaningful changes to reduce the up-front cost of pursuing a skilled trade or attending college or university and action to address mounting student debt. The Federation is also looking to see the following:
The dedication of Federal funding to the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP) to honour the treaty right of Indigenous communities
The full implementation of the recommendations put forth by the Advisory Panel for the Review of Federal Support for Fundamental Science, including an investment in basic, investigator-led research
$10 million from the funding allocated to the Aboriginal Languages Initiative to support the development of learning materials and language courses at the post-secondary level
THE FACTS:
An estimated 10,000 Indigenous learners are awaiting funding to pursue an education, despite this being their treaty right
Total public student debt in Canada has surpassed $28 billion
From 2001 to 2016, tuition fee revenues tripled in the university sector and more than double at community colleges
Corporate subsidization of research undermines basic research and long-term innovation, preventing Canada from remaining competitive in the global market
