CTTF Launches "Aluminum Now" Campaign with Video "Mr. President, Make U.S. Aluminum a Priority"

WASHINGTON, Feb. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross' recently released recommendations to adjust aluminum imports, CTTF, a trade group committed to bringing attention to the issue of global aluminum overcapacity, today launched a campaign video titled "Aluminum Now-- Mr. President, Make U.S. Aluminum a Priority."  "Aluminum Now" makes a direct call to President Trump to take broad comprehensive action on aluminum imports.

Just last week, Sec. Ross released a report to President Trump outlining the significant threat of excess aluminum imports on economic and national security and provided a menu of recommendations to President Trump on adjusting imports.

The U.S. primary aluminum industry has lost 62 percent of its production in the past five years alone. On the other hand, state-owned smelters in China, the Middle East, and in other Asian countries have added 17 million tons of new capacity since 2009. Additionally, because aluminum is used by our military in tanks, navy vessels, and fighter jets, overdependence on foreign sources puts our national security in danger.

"Today we face a flood of imports? that will only accelerate without immediate relief," said CTTF Executive Director Mark Duffy. "Thousands of American jobs are on the line, and the Aluminum Now campaign is looking for the Administration to impose broad comprehensive tariffs on foreign aluminum imports immediately." Duffy went on to note that "for the sake of U.S. national security and American jobs, we hope to see action very soon before an accelerated influx of foreign aluminum imports floods our shores."

The U.S. aluminum market is responsible for over 10,600 American jobs and contributes over $6 billion in U.S. economic output each year. Further layoffs and capacity cuts are inevitable without intervention.  CTTF looks forward to working with the administration to preserve this great American industry.
