TORONTO, July 18, 2017 /CNW/ - Canadian film and television icon, Harvey Atkin, passed away last night following a battle with cancer. Long-time friend and agent, Larry Goldhar, confirmed the news today in a statement.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved friend, husband, father and grandfather, Harvey passed away peacefully last night following his battle with cancer," stated Larry Goldhar, The Characters Talent Agency.

Harvey was 74 years old. He is survived by his wife Celia, daughter Lisa (Adam Sherman), son Danny (Jani Heitner), three sisters and five grandchildren.

Harvey's career took off in 1979 when he was cast by Ivan Reitman to co-star with Bill Murray, Kate Lynch and Chris Makepeace in the camp film, "Meatballs."

From 1981-1988, he appeared regularly as staff sergeant Captain Ronald Coleman in the CBS Television series "Cagney and Lacey" starring Tyne Daly, Sharon Gless and Al Waxman.

Harvey continued to live in Toronto and flew into Los Angeles regularly to film the series. He later often appeared as Judge Ridenour in the TV series "Law and Order."

Harvey was famously recognized for his glasses, nose and mustache combination. He became known as well for his unique sounding voice and was a popular voice on a variety of animated television series. As well, he appeared in numerous guest-starring roles in television and film including "Ticket to Heaven," "Beetlejuice," "Silver Streak," "Atlantic City" and "Barney's Version."

He was known as an actor who got along well with his fellow actors as well as with producers, directors and casting directors. Incredibly, he was one of the best self-promoters in a business that requires constant promotion. His sense of humour and his mental catalogue of jokes was a constant library from which friends and acquaintances could draw upon. Harvey was always willing to share and was always at the centre of it all.
