Pennsylvania Treasury Processes Almost 600,000 Property Tax/Rent Rebate Relief Payments Helping Low-Income Individuals

HARRISBURG, Pa., June 20, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Treasurer Joe Torsella today announced that Treasury is expected to process 590,000 Property Tax/Rent Rebate payments providing almost $191 million in relief to low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities across the state.

"Treasury processes each one of these payments knowing that hundreds of thousands of low-income Pennsylvanians are depending on every dollar," said Torsella. "These are our family, friends and neighbors. These are the grandparents struggling to choose between rent and medicine. The person with disabilities trying to live an independent life. We're pleased to help make this program work to be able to provide some help."

Administered through the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, the Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR) program has provided more than $5.9 billion in property tax and rent relief since its inception in 1971. The program is supported by the Pennsylvania Lottery and gaming funds.

For individuals that applied for the relief, Treasury will be mailing 390,000 paper checks on July 3, and the remaining 200,000 payments will be processed electronically through direct deposit. Payments processed are applicable to the 2016 calendar year.

Applicants can confirm the status of their rebate application and receive the rebate amount online, or by calling 1-888-PATAXES.

Eligible Pennsylvanians may obtain a rebate application form online, or by calling 1-888-222-9190.

Treasury processes 20 million payments per year. The PTRR program accounts for three percent of the 2016 calendar year.
