Organic Waste Becomes Compost, Healthy Soil And Healthy Food

SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Association of Compost Producers are grateful to Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula for introducing Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 69 ? Compost Awareness Week, May 7-13.

"I am proud to introduce this important resolution supporting Compost Awareness Week. California's long history of producing nutritious food has been strengthened by a holistic view of healthy soils.  From the backyard gardener to the family farmer, our practices help to feed and promote a healthier California."  - Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula

This year's theme is "Healthy Soil, Healthy Food." California's compost producers are pleased to have the support of the California Legislature on this resolution, acknowledging the importance of producing and using compost in communities throughout our state.

"We are proud and grateful to have the acknowledgment of the California State Legislature supporting the manufacture and beneficial use of compost in their districts, and throughout California."  - Dan Noble, Executive Director of the Association of Compost Producers (ACP).

The resolution passed the Assembly on a unanimous vote on May 8, 2017.

California produces 13 million cubic yards of compost from over 9 million tons of organic waste each year.  However, to achieve both California greenhouse gas reduction and 75% recycling goals, Californians will need to produce an additional 10 million tons of compost per year by 2025.  ACR 69 cites over a dozen good reasons to produce and use compost.  For these reasons ACP's private and municipal members (and their customers and constituencies) make it their mission in life to build healthy soil from compost for the residents of this state.  By returning the organic residuals generated daily by Californians back to the soil, we complete this important regenerative cycle, producing a valuable product that would otherwise be wasted.

International Compost Awareness Week helps bring this central green business to the attention of all of us as we participate in this renewable carbon cycle, ending with ever-useful compost.

"We are especially gratified that all Californians are opening up to the importance of recycling our organic waste into a beneficial product that has multiple benefits for our communities, and especially appreciate Assemblymember Arambula's leadership in carrying this important message forward. " ? Jeff Ziegenbein, President of ACP.

The Association of Compost Producers (ACP) is a non-profit, 501(c)6 trade association of public and private organizations dedicated to increasing the quality, value and amount of compost being produced and used in California. We do this by promoting activities, product testing, standards and regulations that build healthy soil, benefiting people and the environment.
