The nature and pervasiveness of recent scandals at Volkswagen, Wells Fargo and other well-regarded companies underscore the challenge even storied multinational corporations have to adhere to minimum standards of legally compliant and ethical behavior. Similarly, the Wasatch Front has developed a reputation for being a white-collar crime and affinity fraud capital. The day-long event will include panels, presentations and discussions with local leaders and national experts brought together to address these important ethical issues.

Notable speakers for the 2019 conference include Keith Darcy, former Executive Director of the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association, who will discuss the history of ethics and compliance; Stephen M.R. Covey, author and former President and CEO of Covey Leadership Center, who will discuss "The Speed of Trust;" and Amy Rees Anderson, Managing Partner and Founder of REES Capital, who will address ethical leadership in business.

"One doesn't have to look very hard to see recent examples of fraud and scandal throughout the national and local business landscape, which is why we were compelled to establish this conference to emphasize the importance of legal compliance and ethical conduct, and help develop leaders that embrace the highest ethical principles," said D. Gordon Smith, Dean, BYU Law. "We are pleased to once again have an impressive lineup of speakers who epitomize these high standards join us in discussing these important issues."

A range of thought leaders are involved in sessions throughout the day, including: Jared Bennett, First Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Utah; Amy Oliver, Senior Trial Counsel for the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission Salt Lake Regional Office; Brady Long, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Transocean; Mark Bohn, Anti-Corruption and Compliance Attorney with Miller & Chevalier Chartered; Ryan Napierski, President, Nu Skin Enterprises; Jay Francis, Executive Vice President at Larry H. Miller; Sarah Starkey, Vice President and General Counsel of Larry H. Miller and more.

The major conference sponsors are the J. Reuben Clark Law School and the BYU Wheatley Institution. Other sponsors are Merit Leadership and Nu Skin. The Wheatley Institution supports and disseminates scholarly work to reduce the high cost of unethical conduct, encourages and enables ethical behavior in business and the public square, and enhances the teaching of virtuous principles to the rising generation.

The Organizational Ethics and Compliance Conference will be held on March 29 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the BYU Law and Business schools.
